The regular theory is to not eat three hours before bedtime because that’s when the body is recovering and rebuliding itself. While this theory is somewhat valid, you can’t deny that midnight munchies is a very normal and human thing to occur, for most of us. Especially if you’re doing a night shift, burning the midnight oil with deadlines or have to stay up nursing a baby at night.

Late-night eating can be due to stress eating or just out of boredom, so the body is tempted to indulge in mindless eating where you will eat whatever you get. The solution: snack mindfully and avoid high-calorie foods at night. You need to include food in your snack box that won’t cause you bloating in the A.M.

1. String Cheese

OK, it’s processed, agreed. But one small serve of this snack has enough protein to fill you up with the right amount of protein and fat — and leave you satisfied. And one serve has about 80 calories. Another bonus: cheese has the amino acid tryptophan which may help make you drowsy and go back to the doona.

2. Low-Fat Greek Yoghurt

The tryptophan you’ll get from the dairy will calm you down and you’ll not just feel full but also get ready for bed. And with only 100 to 150 calories, per serve, it’s a winner of a late-night snack. If you’re worried about indigestion or heartburn post a heavy dinner, this is even more perfect for that scenario, as yoghurt has good bacteria that will calm the tummy.

3. Some Turkey slices

Know the feeling post a holiday dinner when all you want to do is lie on the couch and sleep? Yes, that’s because turkey is loaded with sleep-inducing tryptophan, is low in fat and is a source of high-quality protein. Also, a few slices will only tally up to 100 calories.

4. Slices of apple with a spoonful of nut butter

Apple has the fibre and nut butter has the protein and good fats. This is a winner snack any time of the day, if you ask me. But specifically at night, it will leave you full without the dirty heavy feeling.

5. Banana

These are packed with fibre and relaxing tryptophanm and for only about 100 calories each, you get a perfect late-night snack without having to wash anything up. How’s that for a winner!
