Each day we are exposed to many chemicals, heavy metals and environmental toxins which can upset our hormones, gut health, and natural detoxification mechanisms.

Examining your home is a great place to start, to ensure you are not exacerbating the problems unknowingly. Everything from your toothpaste to you window cleaner is a potential culprit and in this four part series, we teach you how to detoxify your entire home, simply. We start in the kitchen with part one.

Part 1: The Kitchen

In the pantry, please check the following:

  • Minimise packaged foods. Keeping to the perimeter of the supermarket is a great place to start!
  • For canned foods, purchase BPA free and organic were possible.
  • Avoid canola oil, vegetable oil and corn oil.
  • Eliminate artificial sweeteners and any other numbers or ingredients you can’t pronounce.
  • Check for added MSG (monosodium glutamate), which may also be named as sodium caseinate, yeast extract, or hydrolysed vegetable protein.
  • Keep your spice rack as natural as possible – most store bought spices contain wheat, sugar and/or preservatives. Fresh is best.

In the fridge, make sure you follow these tips:

  • Fruit and Vegetables: please organic where possible or use an apple cider vinegar (ACV) wash for all produce without a skin that is removed before consumption e.g. spinach leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, apples, peaches and pears. Simply add 1-2 tablespoons of ACV in a sink full of filtered water and wash and rinse well before serving.
  • Meat, Dairy and Eggs: buy free range, organic and grass fed. This avoids hormones, antibiotics and poor quality inflammatory omega-6 fats.
  • Any labelled foods should contain a maximum of five ingredients and less than 10% sugar (10g/100g).

Have you made some fantastic detoxification changes you would like to share?

In Part 2 we examine your common household products. Stay tuned for the next instalment in the Home Detoxification series.
